JP helped us with flooring throughout our whole house. From helping us with estimates, picking out flooring and making sure we had prompt, excellent installation. JP even stayed in contact with the painter and coordinated with them so we didn't have to worry about anything. The floors came out amazing and now we are working with owners, Chad and Taylor for our Window coverings.

Carpet Guide

How Carpet Is Made, How It's Chosen, and How It Holds Up

Carpet remains the most-installed flooring category in American homes, and the modern lineup is broader and more sophisticated than it was even a decade ago. The category divides along three main axes: pile style (cut, loop, or combinations), fiber type (nylon, polyester, olefin, wool), and construction (twist, density, weight). Different combinations produce wildly different results, which is why two carpets that look almost identical in the showroom can perform very differently in your actual home. Carpet is the default choice for bedrooms, family rooms, basements, home offices, and stairs across Amador County, where comfort underfoot and acoustic warmth matter more than waterproof construction.

Carpet fibers and how they perform

Four fibers dominate residential carpet, each with different strengths. Nylon is the most common premium fiber, prized for resilience (it springs back from foot traffic better than any other), color depth, and longevity. Polyester offers excellent stain resistance and a softer hand than nylon at a lower price, though it crushes more easily under heavy traffic. Olefin (polypropylene) is most often used in loop and Berber constructions and outdoor-rated carpets because it resists moisture and fading from sunlight. Wool, the traditional premium fiber, brings unmatched feel and natural stain resistance from its lanolin content, but costs significantly more and requires careful maintenance. Solution-dyed fibers across all four categories resist fading better than topically-dyed fibers because the color goes all the way through each strand.

Pile styles: cut, loop, and what each is best for

Pile style describes what happens at the surface of the carpet. Cut pile means the loops are sheared, creating an upright fiber surface. This family includes plush (smooth, formal), Saxony (denser plush, shows footprints), textured (twisted fibers that hide tracks), and frieze (highly twisted, casual). Loop pile keeps the yarn loops intact, producing Berber (level loop), multi-level loop (sculpted patterns), and pattern carpets that combine cut and loop for visual texture. Each pile style favors different rooms: plush in formal living rooms and master bedrooms where comfort matters most, frieze and Berber on stairs and family rooms where hiding wear matters more, pattern carpets in transitional spaces where visual interest is the point.

Twist, density, and how to read carpet specs

Two specifications drive how long a carpet will look new. Twist count refers to how many times each fiber strand is twisted per inch (counted as turns per inch, or TPI). Higher twist counts (six or more) produce yarns that hold their shape under traffic; lower twist (three or four) flattens faster. Density measures how tightly packed the fibers are, calculated from face weight (ounces of fiber per square yard) and pile height. A high-density carpet with a tight twist will outlast a thicker but loosely packed carpet by years, regardless of which one feels plusher under your hand in the showroom. The performance numbers matter more than the loft.

Why padding is half the carpet

Carpet padding is the layer that absorbs traffic impact, dampens sound, and protects the carpet backing. Cheap padding will cut years off the life of an otherwise good carpet because the carpet flattens against the subfloor with every step. Padding density (measured in pounds per cubic foot) matters more than thickness. High-traffic areas want 8-pound rebond or better, while bedrooms can comfortably use lighter pads. Visco-elastic memory-foam pads add comfort but can void some manufacturer warranties (read the spec sheet). For stairs, a denser, thinner pad is required to keep the carpet from rolling on the tread edges. Adding moisture-barrier padding makes sense in homes with pets or in below-grade installations.

Where carpet works and where it doesn't

Carpet works almost everywhere people want softness, warmth, and quiet. Bedrooms, family rooms, finished basements, home offices, stairs, hallways, and casual living rooms are all natural fits. The exceptions are wet areas (full bathrooms, laundry rooms, mudrooms) where moisture penetrates the carpet backing and creates lasting odors, and slab-on-grade rooms without moisture barriers where wicking can damage the backing over time. Below-grade rooms can take carpet if moisture is properly addressed with a vapor barrier and a closed-cell pad.
